ATEX radios or INTRINSICALLY SAFE radios are used where the environment requires specific equipment to be used as part of the health and safety, and EU regulations or "ATEX directives" for both the equipment and the operation apply. Intrinsically Safe or IS radio equipment as it infers has been tested to comply with the ATEX directive and is certified with an "Ex" symbol to confirm compliance.

Applications for ATEX equipment are wide and varied, from Petrochemical plants, Oil rigs, mines, flour mills and airports to leather factories and processing plants - Any environment where there is a risk of potentially explosive mixtures or gasses or vapours in the air.
