Digital Portable Radios can come in a variety of types and standards with Licence-Free Digital portables or Digital PMR446 radios available as well as Licenced Digital radios.

In general, Digital radio gives much crisper audio than conventional "Analogue" radio and allows some other features  such as smaller channel spacing depending on the model type and system type.  All digital two-way radios have inherent encryption due to the digital signaling and thus stops any casual eavesdropping. In most cases Digital systems will give the impression of better range due to the maintained audio clarity.

Most manufacturers have adopted the ETSI dPMR digital standard which is an FDMA (frequency division multiple access) methodology although some use the less common ETSI DMR standard which uses TDMA (time division multiple access) methodology.
