Licensed Analogue Radios
Licensed two way radios have more power and therefore more range than PMR446 radios. A licensed two-way radio will typically have a transmitter power of 4 or 5 Watts, when compared to a PMR-446 radio with 500mW (0.5Watts). These long range radios do need a licence for use in the UK.
Analogue licensed radios are the established type of two way radio, using traditional FM (Frequency Modulation) and offer higher power than PMR446 radios, and therefore greater range/coverage, but without the normally higher costs associated with Licensed Digital Radios.
Licensed two-way radios (both analogue and digital) also tend to have other additional features which maybe useful - including selective calling, Panic Alarms and Lone Worker alarms, and Man-Down alarms on some radios.
In UK, radio licences are issued by Ofcom and Red Radio are authorised by Ofcom to sell, hire and service all types of professional two-way radio. By law any seller of licensed two way radios (walkie talkies which require a licence) must have a "Business Radio Suppliers" Licence. Beware any online seller that does not have one, as their product is also likely to be illegal or unapproved.
Licensed radios use set frequencies, either the UK Light Frequencies or a specialist "Technically Assigned" Licence with more dedicated and private channels. Depending on what type of licence these radios are used with, they can be used with or without a base or a Repeater to further increase range.
